Maryland SR22 Insurance Quotes & SR22 Information
The State of Maryland may require a driver to file for and manage an SR22 insurance policy for a minimum period of three (3) years if that driver is found guilty of certain crimes. Possible violations may include DUI, excessive point accumulation, being a repeat offender, and violating a previously imposed driving restriction.
These are just some examples that may require a driver to file for an SR22 policy before their license is reinstated. There are other factors that might ultimately decide this as well. They could be, however are not limited to a driver's first offense, past driving history (motor vehicle record), and a subsequent offense in a certain time period.
Traffic violations that seem minimal at the time can add up to a serious infraction without a driver even knowing it. We strongly recommend that if you think a recent traffic ticket or other moving violation may require you to get an SR22 insurance policy, please get a copy of your driving record or contact a Maryland MVA Office to discuss your options.
What happens in Maryland at an administrative hearing?
Usually you have only 7-10 days to schedule an administrative hearing after an arrest or an official notice.
Administrative hearings are set up as an opportunity for a driver to be heard and to present evidence in their favor regarding the future status of their driving privileges.
In Maryland an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) starts by explaining the procedures of the administrative hearing, each side will have the opportunity to present an opening statement if they desire, provide documents, and call any witnesses that they may have. There is also an opportunity for the opposing party to cross-examine any witnesses, and the party that bears the burden of proof (responsibility to prove a disputed charge or allegation) may have the right to present rebuttal evidence.
Before closing the hearing each side may have the opportunity to offer a closing argument before a final decision by the ALJ is rendered. At this time the ALJ will also specify a time period in which a decision will be made and how a driver will be notified.
Don't forget! You can have a Maryland Attorney represent you at your administrative hearing. In fact it is recommended due to the complexity of these hearings and knowing when and how to present initial evidence and rebuttal evidence to have the maximum effect in your case.

You can renew your license by mail if you are eligible, or by visiting a MVA location in person.
If you are or have participated in an IID program, served any jail time, were required to file for an SR22 insurance policy, or were required to fulfil a suspension, revocation, or cancellation period relating to your driving privileges; it is recommended that you may want to start by getting a copy of your driving record to find out the status of your license and any and all actions against you.
We also recommend that you contact a Maryland MVA customer service representative at 1-800-950-1682 or visit a MVA location near you for more information regarding your specific requirements for a license reinstatement.
What if I fail to keep continuous coverage of my Maryland SR22 insurance policy?
Remember: Insurance providers are required by Maryland law to notify the MVA when a lapse in SR22 insurance has occurred. After the MVA has been notified a license suspension, cancellation or revocation is a likely possibility.
Failing to keep an SR22 insurance policy continuous could require a driver to:
- Start the SR22 insurance coverage period from the beginning
- Be subject to additional and stiffer penalties
- Possibly be cited for driving on a suspended license and/or driving without insurance if you were pulled over
How can a driver avoid a lapse in their SR22 insurance coverage?
To help avoid any lapses in coverage pay your SR22 insurance policy premium in advance. At least 2 months in advance. If 2 months in advance is difficult, at the minimum please pay a month in advance. The penalties that could be imposed for allowing a lapse in SR22 insurance coverage are just too great and not worth the risk.
