Maine SR22 Insurance Quotes & SR22 Information
By law the State of Maine can require a driver who has been convicted of certain crimes, for example OUI, to agree to file and carry an SR22 insurance policy for the minimum three (3) year period before a license can be reinstated.
Other violations that might require a driver in Maine to carry an SR22 insurance policy are, but not limited to:
- Failure to have and show proper insurance coverage
- Leaving the scene of an accident that you were involved in
- Reckless driving
- Accumulating too many points against your license
These are just a few examples of offenses that might require a driver to file for and maintain an SR22 insurance policy. Some violations automatically require an SR22 policy for a license reinstatement, while the collection of small violations need to accrue before an SR22 policy may become part of a license reinstatement.
If you think a recent conviction or a traffic ticket has possibly classified you as a high-risk driver, please locate and call a Maine BMV to discuss your driving record with a representative of the State.
What happens in Maine at an administrative hearing?
In Maine unless the Secretary of the State has set a date for an administrative hearing, there is a ten (10) day period from the date of the suspension or revocation (cancellation) in which you will need to request an administrative hearing in writing.
If you where given a suspension notice from a Police Officer or the State of Maine, the suspension notice will tell you if you are eligible for an administrative hearing and how to request that hearing as well.

Also it is your right to have an attorney represent you at an administrative hearing. An experienced attorney can help with the discovery of evidence for your case, as well as in the subpoenaing of witnesses.
Remember: There is a free initial consultation that attorneys offer to learn about your case. This consultation can give you idea of the experience an attorney has and can help you decide on what to do next.

What if I fail to keep my Maine SR22 insurance policy current?
Failure to keep your SR22 insurance policy current has negative consequences that could come along with it. For example:
- If a driver did have a lapse in their insurance coverage and their license was suspended, revoked or cancelled, and somehow got pulled over, there is a possibility of a being charged with the violation of driving on a suspended license.
- If a driver is pulled over and cannot show proof of insurance, that driver may be cited for failing to provide proof of insurance.
- A driver's vehicle registration may be suspended, revoked, or cancelled as well as their license.
Note: By law when a lapse in an SR22 insurance policy has occurred, the issuing insurance provider is required to notify the Maine BMV. Once notified the BMV may suspend, cancel, or revoke a driver's license.
How can a driver avoid a lapse in their SR22 insurance coverage?
The easiest way to avoid a lapse in coverage is to pay your SR22 policy premium well in advance, if you can. Much of this can depend on your budget and your policy cost. We always recommend that you pay your premium at least 60 days ahead of time. This may seem like it is too far in advance, but considering the additional penalties and fees associated with those penalties, we don't think so.
