Michigan SR22 Insurance Quotes & SR22 Information
The minimum period for an SR22 insurance policy filing is three (3) years in the State of Michigan. However given the compounding factors of crimes and the penalties associated with these crimes this period could be longer or shorter.
The length of an SR22 insurance period might additionally be determined by a driver's MVR (Motor Vehicle Record), other crimes and the penalties being taken against a driver at the same time, and if the crime that a driver was convicted of was a first or subsequent offense. These are just some examples of externalities that may have an effect on how long a convicted driver's sentencing could be.
There are many possible offenses in Michigan that may require a driver to manage an SR22 insurance policy for a number of years. These crimes may include but not limited to the following:
- Operating Under the Influence of Liquor or Drugs (OUIL and OUID respectively)
- Unlawful Blood Alcohol Content (UBAC)
- Fleeing and Eluding
- Vehicular Manslaughter
These are just a few of the more serious offenses that may require a driver to manage an SR22 insurance policy for three (3) years, however a combination and conviction of smaller crimes may also require a driver to file for an SR22 policy as well. Please contact a Michigan SOS Branch Office for more information regarding these and other crimes, or a Michigan Attorney to discuss your legal options.
How do I renew my drivers license in Michigan?
To renew your license without any convictions please visit Michigan's license renewal web page and choose the method that is best for you.
If your license has been suspended, revoked, confiscated, restricted, etc. you may need to satisfy the suspension, or revocation (cancellation) period prior to requesting a Driver License Hearing. For alcohol related offenses you may need to obtain and submit a Substance Abuse Evaluation Form before you are eligible for a license reinstatement.
Considering the complex nature of renewing a driver's license with one or more convictions and depending on your driving record and how that may affect you, you may need to go to a Driver Assessment and Appeal Division or a Circuit Court for an appeal hearing prior to a license being reinstated.
We want you to have the best information available to you to make this difficult time easier for you, so we ask that you contact a Michigan Secretary of State Branch or call the Michigan SOS Information Center at 1-888-767-6424 for a more detailed explanation of how to renew your driver's license.

Does Michigan have an Ignition Interlock Device program?
Yes, once a driver has been arrested and convicted as a repeat alcohol offender an Ignition Interlock Device may need to be installed in their vehicle as a condition of a license reinstatement.
Please download and read Michigan's Guide to Ignition Interlock Devices for more information or visit Michigan's Repeat Offender Laws web page as it contains many of the policies, procedures, and how to apply and get an Ignition Interlock Device installed in your vehicle.
Or you may contact the Michigan Department of State Drivers License Appeal Division at 1-888-767-6424 for more information.
Where can I find a Michigan Ignition Interlock Device installer?
Michigan is currently using the following manufactures (vendors) for their Ignition Interlock Devices, however this list of vendors is subject to change. Please contact the State of Michigan Information Center at 1-888-767-6424 or the manufacturer directly for a location near you, the costs involved, how to schedule an installation, and any other questions you may have.

What are Michigan's minimum liability requirements?
- $20,000 coverage for bodily injury or death of any person per accident
- $40,000 coverage for all persons in any one (1) accident
- $10,000 coverage for property damage per accident.
What if I fail to keep my Michigan SR22 insurance policy current?
If you let your SR22 policy lapse your insurance provider is required by law to notify the Secretary of State (SOS) that a lapse has occurred. The SOS will usually suspend that driver's license without much notice, if any at all.
Additionally if you are unaware that your license has been suspended and you are stopped by the police you may face additional charges of driving on a suspended license and no proof of insurance. These additional crimes, if convicted, may include some jail time, get your vehicle impounded, and require you to carry an SR22 insurance policy for a longer period.
How can I avoid a lapse in my Michigan SR22 insurance coverage?
There are a few ways to avoid a lapse in your SR22 insurance coverage, such as:
- Finding a policy that isn't too expensive, but satisfies the coverage requirements that you need.
- Pay the policy premium on time, better yet pay it 2 months in advance.
- Talk to you insurance policy provider if you are having a hard time paying, they might be able to help somehow. You never know until you ask.
IMPORTANT: The penalties for letting your SR22 insurance policy lapse are just not worth the extra time and money to have any lapse in coverage. Make it a top priority to pay this bill early!
