Additionally any jail time, IID installation, traffic school, alcohol treatment program, or SR22 insurance policy will need to be completed prior to a license reinstatement.
However this does not mean you can't find out what actions are being taken against you or the necessary procedures to get your license reinstated.

Yes. Once a driver completes and receives a certificate from Montana's Traffic School (driver rehabilitation program) they may receive a 50% reduction in their license reinstatement fee.
A message from the Rocky Mountain Traffic School:
At a minimum, approved traffic schools must include pre-instruction and post-instruction testing of each participant and four hours of instruction on Montana driving laws, the importance of positive driving attitudes and habits, defensive driving techniques and the responsible use of drugs and alcohol.

What are Montana's minimum liability requirements?
- $25,000 coverage for bodily injury or death of any person per accident
- $50,000 coverage for all persons in any one (1) accident
- $10,000 coverage for property damage per accident.
What if I do not keep my Montana SR22 insurance policy current?
Two of most likely penalties that could possibly occur would be:
- A ticket for driving on a suspended license
- A ticket for no insurance
Reason being is that your insurance provider is required by law to notify the MVD when there has been a lapse in SR22 insurance coverage. The MVD usually suspends a driver's license without much of a notice to that driver.
So it is quite possible you could be driving and not even know your license is suspended, due to a notice of suspension being sent to you in the mail verses the electronic updating law enforcement gets.
If this unfortunate situation happens, you may be subject to:
- Jail time
- Your vehicle's registration being suspended
- Your vehicle being impounded
- Paying any claims related to an accident if you are involved in one without insurance
It is just not worth the potential risks, even to be without insurance coverage for one day.
What steps can I take to avoid a lapse in my Montana SR22 insurance coverage?
The best step to take to avoid a lapse in coverage is to pay your SR22 insurance policy premium as far in advance as you can. We recommend 2 months in advance, however this can also, at the minimum, be accomplished by paying your insurance premium a few weeks in advance.
